The officers were near Myrtle Avenue and Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant when the 28-year-old gunman approached their car.

At least one of the officers was shot in the head, police said.

After firing on the officers, the man ran into a nearby subway station before shooting himself, an NYPD official said.

The gunman posted an angry, threatening message about the police on his social media account before ambushing the police officers.

The shooting comes after a grand jury decided to not indict NYPD officers over Eric Garner's chokehold death. Eric Garner, a black man, died after white police officers attempted to arrest him for selling untaxed cigarettes.

The Dec. 3 decision sparked nationwide protests and led to the arrest of four people who allegedly attacked police officers during a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge.

The last NYPD officer killed by gunfire in the line of duty was Peter Figoski in 2011.
