The Modi Tsunami has now made BJP the largest political party in the world as far as membership count is concerned. It’s aggressive enrolment drive in the past five months have placed membership count to a whopping 8.80 crore. This is more than the Communist Party of China, that was leading the race with 8.60 crore members.

Aimed at crossing the 10 crore mark by the end of this month, BJP party president Amit Shah will announce the final figure at the national executive to be held in Bangalore on April 3-4.

However, criticizing the figures, skeptics have said this to be no reliable reflection of the party's actual strength on the ground. ET has learnt from party insiders that the enrolment through missed call has remarkably contributed to this achievement. Modi’s inclination to digital platform has yielded the party an upper hand in many aspects and becoming the largest party may soon lead to a social media hullaballoo.

While the membership drive is ending tomorrow, there are chances that it may be extended in a few states like Maharashtra where, according to the party, a large number of people are still calling to register themselves with BJP. After UP, where it has set a target of 1.5 crore, Maharashtra is expected to fetch the maximum number of members for the party. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have both already accounted for more than 80 lakh members, according to the ET.

Not only this achievement by the ruling party comes as a boasting quotient, this will also help Shah understand where the party’s strength lie in the states while preparing for poll later this year and 2016.
