The students were going to take a tour of the campus.
Reuters reports a FedEx truck "lost control, crossed a divider on Interstate 5, side-swiped a car and then smashed head-on into the tour bus around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday," according to California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Tracy Hoover.
Around 50 people were onboard the bus. 5 students, 2 chaperones, and the drivers of both vehicles were killed.
