Barely anybody is using Microsoft's new browser

Microsoft's re-entry into the browser market could have hit a roadblock: barely anybody is using it.

Data shared with PC World, and independently verified by Business Insider, shows that the Edge browser, released alongside Windows 10, is seeing surprisingly little usage when compared to Chrome and Firefox on the same platform.

The data from Stat Counter, a site that tracks which browsers people use across the web, shows that Edge peaked at approximately 20% usage among Windows 10 users at the end of July, before dropping down to 14% by the end of August.

Independently of this, Netmarketshare claims that the Edge browser is seeing around a 2% share of browser traffic across all platforms. This is, however, to be expected as Windows 10 has not been available for long. But for a browser that is the default on over 75 million PCs the numbers may be concerning for Microsoft.

Microsoft has been working hard to re-energise various aspects of its consumer business, such as Office and Cortana, as part of Satya Nadella's turnaround of the company.

Whether Edge succeeds or fails won't be decided in the first couple of months, but the usage numbers - especially the users who appear to have tried and then discarded Edge - won't be providing cause for any sort of celebration just yet.
