After Ajay Devgn’s cop avatar in Singham Returns, it is now turn of Rani Mukerji to essay a cop in the latest flick Mardaani. The movie is directed by Pradeep Sarkar and based on crime and child trafficking in India.

The movie is produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj banner. Mardaani has managed get some great reviews from the critics and junta but did not get the box office ringing. In the first weekend, the movie so far has managed to collect Rs 3.45 crore on Friday (August 22) and added another Rs 3.3 crore on Saturday, as per the data collected by Box Office Cinema. The business of the movie spiked on Sunday and it managed to earn Rs 5.5 crore at the box office, bringing the total weekend collections to Rs 13.71 crore.

Mardaani has been released in around 1300+ screens and from reports it has been pegged that it has garnered about 20-25% occupancy level on average. The movie is doing better in the Mumbai-Maharashtra circle.

The past few weeks have been pretty good with the release of movies such as Kick, Entertainment and Singham Returns, but Mardaani did not register a similar bumper opening.

Rani Mukerji was last seen in Talash opposite Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor. We hope that Mardaani manages to maintain its earning over the weekdays and ends up having a decent first week collection.

In 2014, we have already seen three interesting woman-oriented movies – Gulaab Gang, Queen and Bobby Jasoos – of which Queen had managed to win the hearts of the Indian audience.

Apart from Mardaani, the other movies that were released this week are Mad About Dance, Life Is Beautiful and Expendables 3, but none of them have managed to create any magic at the box office.

On the other hand, Singham Returns manages to hold on well in the second week of its release. The Ajay Devgn starrer has collected a total of Rs 120.98 crore in its nine-day run (till Saturday).
