Centenarian Indian sprinter wins gold at World Masters Games in Auckland

When 101- year-old Man Kaur finished the 100 metres sprint at the World Masters Games held in Auckland, it was the 17th gold medal that the Indian athlete was about to put into her kitty.


Kaur finished the sprint in 1.14 minutes, a mere 64.42 seconds off Usain Bolt's 100m world record that was set in 2009.

However, Kaur’s gold medal was confirmed right from the start, given that she was the only participant in the 100-years-and-over category at the event.

"I enjoyed it and am very, very happy," Kaur told reporters, adding that it’s the participation that matters to her and not the victory. "I'm going to run again, I'm not going to give up. I will participate, there's no full stop."

It was only eight years ago that Kaur decided to take up athletics at the tender age of 93, at the suggestion of her son Gurdev Singh. Prior to that, she had no experience in any kind of sports or athletics.

She has been dubbed the "miracle from Chandigarh" by New Zealand media.
