Chennai Police has seized Rs 45 crore in old currency notes from a tailor’s shop in Zackariah Colony in Kodambakkam area.

The police got a tip-off, after which it raided the shop of Dhandapani, the tailor who stitches uniforms for police personnel. This raid led to the team finding four gunny bags stuffed with demonetised currency.

Dhandapani, who has been taken into custody, told police that the money belongs to a realtor Pondy Bazaar, Pathan Gilani, who had given it to him to be kept in the shop.

However, police suspect that Dhandapani doubles up as an agent for exchanging old currency notes for a commission.

A report has been submitted to the Reserve Bank of India after handing over the cash. As per Police sources, the case would most likely be shifted to the I-T department or the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.
