Chipotle might be adding chorizo to its menu.

The burrito chain is testing the Mexican-style sausage - which consists of ground chicken and pork with paprika, cumin, garlic and red wine - in Kansas City, the Kansas City Star reports.

Chipotle head chef Nate Appleman has been "chomping at the bit" to roll out chorizo since he arrived at the company in 2010, according to the Star's report.

"I've been beating the drum for five years," Appleman told the Star. "It was one of the first things I worked on."

Chipotle rarely comes out with the new menu items.

The company's menu has remained virtually unchanged since its founding more than two decades ago, aside from the recent addition of tofu Sofritas.

Adding chorizo to the menu could help Chipotle with its recent pork shortage.

The company has been unable to serve its pork-based Carnitas in hundreds of restaurants over the last several months since cutting ties with a supplier who didn't meet Chipotle's standard for raising animals.

"Chorizo uses ground meat from various parts of the hog, so adding it may help ease that supply-chain glitch while wasting less of the animals they do have," the Star notes.
