Government has electrified 5,537 villages in this fiscal so far

As per a statement released by the Power Ministry, in the ongoing fiscal, 5,537 villages have been electrified till date.

"258 villages have been electrified across the country during the last week (February 15-21, 2016) under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna (DDUGJY)," said the statement.

Out of these 5537 villages, 120 are from Odisha, 64 from Jharkhand, 41 from Assam, 19 from Madhya Pradesh, 8 from Rajasthan, and 6 from Chhattisgarh.

"In 2015-16, 5,537 villages have been electrified till date. Out of the remaining 12,915 villages, 9,026 are to be electrified through grid and 3,381 through off-grid where grid solutions are out of reach due to geographical barriers, (among others)," it further read.

As per PM Modi's Independence Day speech of 2015, the government would be electrifying 18,452 villages within 1,000 days i.e. by May 1, 2018.
