Here’s why Facebook’s Mumbai

A team of Karnataka police searched social networking giant Facebook’s Mumbai office last week after the company refused to divulge details about a Mangaluru-based suspect guilty of posting derogatory content on goddesses and spreading communal tension after the content went viral via Whatsapp.

However, when Facebook declined to give out information on the suspect Jabbar, the police booked the social networking website on charges of non-cooperation.

The police carried out searches at Facebook’s Bandra Kurla Complex office from 2 pm on Thursday afternoon acting on an order issued by Mangaluru court stating Facebook’s non-cooperation.

On its part, the social networking website has changed its stance after the court order ans has promised to divulge all information about the suspect within 48 hours.

The suspect Jabbar was arrested after the police stepped in to track him down. They have registered a case under section 153 A(promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295 A(deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting religious beliefs) in connection to the online content.
