The tech savvy Indians have taken social networking major Facebook user base to 125 million in India, adding a whopping 13 million users in the six months. According to an ET report, India is the second largest market for Facebook globally.

According to the report, Facebook had 112 million users in India till December 2014 but seeing the internet penetration in the country, decided to launch Facebook Lite to cater users with slower internet connection.

“In India, Facebook has 125 million average users (MAU), while the number of mobile MAUs stands at 114 million. On a daily basis, 59 million users in India are accessing Facebook and 53 million are accessing us from their mobile phones," said Vijay Shankar, the head of Products at Facebook (Facebook Lite) in the report.

He added that the Facebook Lite app, which was announced earlier this month, has been "built ground up for markets like India" where internet speeds are slow.

It should be noted that Facebook Lite will have all the features except video on news feeds, which require a high internet speed to run. It also allows a user to select the quality of images they see on their news feed to optimise data consumption.
