India’s apex medical research institute The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has launched a Bike Ambulance service, aimed at bringing quick medical help during times of traffic congestion.

Under a pilot project “Mission DELHI (Delhi Emergency Life Heart-Attack Initiative)," the institute has launched the service at the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi, deploying four motorbike-ambulances and 12 nurses trained to handle emergency cases.

The idea behind the bike ambulance service was to provide assistance within 10 minutes of the attack. As of now, the service is available in a range of 3KM across the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), reported Hindustan Times.

The nurses deployed at the control centre at AIIMS will determine the nature of help needed on the basis of information shared by the caller. The team will also try to establish a virtual connection with cardiologists at AIIMS hospital, reported Live Mint citing Professor Balram Bhargava Director General ICMR.

Introducing bike ambulances was need of the hour as one of ICMR reported said heart diseases were the biggest killer in 2016 causing 28.1% of all deaths in India.
