Centre today told the Supreme Court that information on black money given by foreign countries cannot be made public. The next hearing in the case will take place on October 28.

Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani said that this is an attempt by the government to shield those who have stashed black money abroad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had, on its first day in office, constituted a high-powered special investigation team (SIT) to look into the issue of black money.

The government has given the SIT a free hand to probe the issue. It will file periodic status reports to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had asked the government to set up a SIT to probe individuals whose names were disclosed by Germany for having accounts in that country.
