It’s not the first time that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has landed in a soup for the promises made by her erstwhile left front government. Bengaluru based IT major, Infosys had paid Rs 75 crore to HIDCO for the land at Rajarhat at a time when the CPI(M) was in power in the state.

Now when Banerjee is against any kind of SEZ or Special Economic Zone in the state and have already scrapped many plans on the same, Infosys has asked to repay the money it has given in advance for the land or give SEZ status to their software development centre project.
This was supposed to be the first Infosys centre in the state. "Even if governments change, the continuity in policies should not. We have immense faith in West Bengal", a senior official with Infosys has said.
When contacted, Infosys spokesperson said: "We have asked the state government for SEZ status. We are hopeful that this matter will be resolved."

Meanwhile, the other official said: "What the state government would have to do is just forward our proposal to the Centre with a recommendation and nothing else. We have presence in 11 states across the country and all of them have done that."
