Pierre-Paul had cut off all communication with the Giants this off-season, first because of a contract dispute and then because of his injury.
Before he was injured, the Giants had designated Pierre-Paul as their franchise player, which disappointed him because he was looking for a long-term deal. He hadn't signed the one-year, $14.8 million franchise tender when he injured his hand, and while he was in the hospital he didn't allow Giants officials to see him. Both team owner John Mara and head coach Tom Coughlin said they hadn't heard from him, and he wouldn't even let people see him in the hospital.
According to ESPN, Pierre-Paul will meet with Giants' doctors next week before he signs the tender so that he can be assured he won't land on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) List, which would cost him at least six week's worth of money. Writes ESPN:
If the Giants put Pierre-Paul on the NFI List, they could elect not to pay him for games missed. The NFI list requires a player to miss at least six games. Pierre-Paul believes he can return to the field earlier than that, so before he signs the tender, he would like to speak to the Giants about guaranteeing the prorated portion of his salary that reflects the number of games he and they expect him to be able to play.
The New York Daily News leaked the first pictures of Pierre-Paul after his accident. According to ESPN, Pierre-Paul will play with some sort of wrap or cast around his injured hand.
