Dismal state of unemployment in Uttar Pradesh was revealed when over 23 lakh people applied for 368 posts of peon in the state secretariat.
Shockingly, over two lakh applicants had BTech, BSc, MSc and MCom degrees and 255 candidates had a PhD degree in hand.
Officials at the administration, which would be conducting the appointment, were also shocked by the response.
The recruitment was to be done through direct interview, which may take a couple of years.
Candidates said it was better to work as a peon as they were unemployed and running from pillar to post for jobs.
