In her new self-directed video for "Borders," the British-Sri Lankan rapper follows refugees on their hazardous journeys. It's unclear where they are coming from, but they are all looking for a new home and a better "life" - a word the group spells with its bodies on the fence.

The new song serves as a rallying cry for people fleeing war and persecution around the world. The timing of the video's release is rather poignant, in light of recent global controversy on whether to accept Syrian refugees.
M.I.A.'s music has always been politically-charged, dealing with issues like immigration and war.
"The world I talked about 10 years ago is still the same," she recently tweeted. "That's why it's hard for me to say it again on a new LP."
"Borders" will appear on M.I.A.'s fifth album, "Matahdatah." She hasn't yet announced a release date.
