Malls, movie theatres, and eating joints can now remain open 24x7

While government levies a lot of taxes on dining out or watching your favourite movie at theaters, it also makes sure that the citizens can do so whenever they want.

A new rule, which would allow shopping malls, theatres and eating joints to be open 24x7, has become a reality with the clearance of the Model Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Services) Act 2015.

The move is also aimed at generating employment prospects, and could prove to be a fitting move for offline retailers who are worried over customers’ preference for online shopping that can be done round the clock.

Here are a few things about the rule that you should know:

1. The Act covers all public amusement establishments such as shopping malls, restaurants and local markets, which are not covered under the Factories Act 1948, with the condition that they must have at least 10 or more employees.

2. The Act does not cover government offices (like banks), insurance companies and factories that are covered under the Factories Act 1948.

3. The Act allows women to work 24x7, but they should be facilitated with safe transportation services and other related facilities such as creches if they are working in night shifts.

4. The implementation of this Act will be issued as an advisory to states, and consensus from trade unions will not be needed.
