Cuban, presumed in the poll to be the Democratic candidate facing Trump, received the backing of 42% of respondents. Thirty eight percent of those surveyed picked Trump, while 20% said they were unsure.
In February, Public Policy Polling found that Trump led Cuban by a 41% to 40% spread, with 19% of respondents saying they were unsure of whom they'd vote for.
At the time, Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling, told Business Insider in an email that he thought Cuban was "pretty competitive."
Cuban, the owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks and star of ABC's "Shark Tank," received the support of 8% of respondents who voted for Trump last fall, while Trump received the backing of 4% of respondents who voted for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, whom Cuban supported.
"These are always entertaining," Cuban told Business Insider in an email. "As I have said before, I would only run if I can come up with solutions for healthcare, the plight of working families, and reducing the stress levels of our country. It's possible. When I have something to offer, I will."
An often-vocal critic of Trump, Cuban has given strong hints that he may run for president in 2020, though it's not clear whether he would run as a Democrat or as an independent candidate. Trump has, at times, fired back at Cuban for his criticism.
Public Policy Polling surveyed 887 registered voters from August 18-21. The margin of error was 3.3 percentage points.
