After the launch of Celerio petrol AMT in India, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) had launched CNG variant of the hatchback in domestic market a few months ago. The car manufacturer is now planning to roll out diesel powered Celerio. As per media reports, MSI is likely to come up with Celerio diesel by early next year and the vehicle is currently being tested across the country. As for the pricing is concerned we expect the hatchback to be priced between Rs 4.75 lakh and Rs 5.75 lakh.

If we believe media reports, the car will not be powered with Fiat sourced 1.3 litre multijet diesel engine, instead it will come alongwith a 800 cc diesel motor developed by Maruti. According to the sources, this is the same engine that will also power MSI’s Y9T LCV which is supposed to make its debut prior to Celerio diesel. The sources also revealed that the 800 cc, two cylinder, turbocharged diesel powertrain is supposed to be a frugal unit capable of outputting a top power between 45 to 50 Bhp and peak torque between 120 Nm to 130 Nm.

There are speculations that suggest that the low displacement engine is capable of delivering an exceedingly high fuel efficiency of 30 kmpl. If this turns out be a reality, it would certainly help Celerio diesel to leave behind its rivals, including Chevrolet Best diesel and Hyundai Grand i10, in the race of popularity.

According to sources close to the development, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is working on curbing the noise of the diesel engine that was supposedly high. In a bid to keeping the price under affordable range, the hatchback in the car will be equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox. Also, it is believed that the car manufacturer might not offer automated manual transmission in Celerio diesel.
