Encouraged by the overwhelming response to Android One smartphones, chip maker MediaTek has said it expects about two million handsets to be sold in India this year. India is the second largest mobile phone market in the world.

The Taiwan-based company has tied up with US-based search engine giant Google on Android One. This would help provide high-quality budget Android phones for Indian consumers.

Google recently launched three devices in collaboration with Micromax, Karbonn and Spice under the Android One initiative. The Android One handset, priced at Rs 6,399 onwards, was launched first in India. The software updates for Android One would be available directly from Google, giving Google full control over the operating system.
