As per a Microsoft spokesperson, the changes are being done to better serve its customers and partners.

"Today, we are taking steps to notify some employees that their jobs are under consideration or that their positions will be eliminated. Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time-to-time, re- deployment in others," said an email from the abovementioned spokesperson.

As per a report in the New York Times, the shuffle would be led by India-born Satya Nadella, and will include 3,000 to 4,000 jobs, mostly outside the US.

However, the report was made on the description of a person familiar with Microsoft's plans, who requested anonymity.

However, not every person who will be let go from his or her job stands to lose it, as some of them will get other jobs within the software company, in order to evolve the skill sets of the workforce.

Microsoft has 71,000 employees in the US and 121,000 employees around the globe.
