Modi Underlines India’s Commitment To Peace

On his fourth day of his Japan visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the need to empower women. He also addressed apprehensions of the international community over India not signing the NPT by asserting that India's commitment to peace is in the "DNA of Indian society."

"India is a land of Lord Buddha. Buddha lived for peace and suffered for peace and that message is prevalent in India,” he said.

During an interactive session, he was asked how India could command the trust of the international community without signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Modi said that India did not sign the NPT because it has flaws.

Modi said, “commitment to non-violence is total” and it is in the "DNA of Indian society and this is above any international treaty."

He added that India has always believed in the concept of 'vasudhaiv kutumbakam.' He said, "When we consider the whole world as one family, how can we even think about doing anything that would harm or hurt anyone?"
