More than 300 teams have a chance to win Elon Musk's Hyperloop pod contest

On Monday, the official Hyperloop account tweeted the number of teams advancing, stating that 162 university teams from 16 countries made the cut. However, no names of teams have been shared yet.
These teams will be required to submit a preliminary design briefing by the end of October revealing details about their passenger pod design. SpaceX, which is sponsoring the contest, may narrow entrants down even further based on this briefing.
Musk officially announced his Hyperloop pod competition in June. But SpaceX released general rules and requirements for contest participants in August.
The deadline for entrants to sign up for the competition was September 15. The company received more than 1,200 entries.
According to the general rules document, any entity could enter the competition, but SpaceX didn't offer much more on what the applications would be judged on.
The rules state:
"Any entity is welcome to enter the competition by September 15, 2015, and submit the Preliminary Design Briefing in October 2015. However, SpaceX, at its sole discretion, will select the teams that participate in the January 2016 Design Weekend. After submitting their Preliminary Design Briefing, teams will be notified within two weeks whether they have been chosen to participate in Design Weekend."

Design Weekend will take place January 15, 16 of 2016 at Texas A&M University. Selected teams will then be asked to compete in the final part of the competition, which will be hosted at the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif. during June 2016.
These entrants will be given the opportunity to test out their pod designs on subscale Hyperloop test track that SpaceX is building.
While Musk is apparently not interested in developing a business out of the Hyperloop, he has said that building a Hyperloop system would not be difficult.
Last month he told CNN Money that building a Hyperloop is "really not that hard." Check out what else he had to say about it the futuristic tube travel here.
