Multiple casualties reported in New York City shooting incident

One person is in custody following a shooting incident that local news outlets reported left multiple people dead and injured in New York City on Tuesday.

The incident occurred near the West Side Highway in downtown Manhattan, according to NBC News. The report said a gunman apparently rammed his vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians and opened fire. The shooting occurred near Chambers Street and West Street by Stuyvesant High School.

Fox News reported that the driver of the vehicle drove into the bike lane for more than 10 blocks, hitting pedestrians along the way. At least four people were killed, according to the New York Daily News.

One person is in custody, according to the New York Police Department, which added that there is no longer any active threat. Police urged people to avoid the area, and warned that many emergency vehicles will be in the area.

Shortly after the attack, social media began flooding with photos and unconfirmed accounts from the scene.

"I was just walking out of school heading in that direction and heard the shots," a student from nearby Borough of Manhattan Community College told Business Insider.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is en route to the scene, according to de Blasio's office.
