Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party and one of the most prominent campaigners for Britain to leave the European Union, said that it looks like the Remain side has won the referendum on Britain's EU membership.

It "looks like remain will edge it," Farage told Sky News just minutes after polls closed at 10 p.m. BST.

The statement comes after a YouGov on-the-day survey showed Remain leading Leave by 52% to 48%.

The final result is expected to come in closer to 7 a.m. BST, but we will see local counting-area results start to trickle in around 1 a.m. BST. You can follow our live EU referendum-result coverage here.

The poll results follow a historical trend: Referendums often see a late move toward keeping the status quo because change is seen as a risk.
