Real-estate magnate Donald Trump's rise in the polls isn't showing any signs of slowing down ahead of the first GOP presidential primary debate this week.

A new Monmouth University poll published Monday found Trump not only ahead, but also with a widened lead. He now has more than a two-to-one advantage over his nearest rivals.

"Republican support for Donald Trump just continues to grow with no clear sense of who his constituency really is," Patrick Murray, director of the poll, said in a statement accompanying the results.

Murray added, "This makes it very difficult for his opponents to figure out how to take him on in the upcoming debate." The debate, hosted by Fox News, is Thursday and national poll results will determine which candidates make the cut.

Trump earned 26% of Republican voters, according to the poll, compared to roughly 12% for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and 11% for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R). No other candidate had more than 6%, though with a diverse field of credible candidates, the polling is likely to be volatile in the coming weeks and months.

The Monmouth survey also found that Trump's once sky-high unpopularity has essentially reversed itself compared to previous months' surveys.

The pollster's write-up of the results noted "that GOP voter opinion of Donald Trump continues to improve. It now stands at 52% favorable to 35% unfavorable. It was 40% favorable to 41% unfavorable three weeks ago. Before he announced in June, it stood at a significantly negative 20% favorable to 55% unfavorable."
