It's happening at the McCormick Correctional Institution in the city of McCormick, about 80 miles west of Columbia. McCormick County Emergency Services said on its Facebook page that the facility "had a situation that occurred and prisoners are trying to escape at this time."

The South Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed that it was "actively responding" to an ongoing incident at the prison, and describe it as "an isolated incident in one housing unit" at the facility.

The department said "all staff are safe and accounted for."

It was not immediately clear what events led to the alleged escape attempt.
