An email by the Professor addressed to the institute's director, the HRD minister and Chairman of IIT's Board of Governors, says: " "As per my knowledge, there is rampant cheating going on in most of the examinations conducted at IIT Bombay. It is painful to learn from my colleagues that they have even searched the toilets and discovered some hidden material in the form of notes that some students planned to use on the pretext of using the toilets at the time of the exams."

The letter further reads, "Besides secretively passing notes in the examination halls, several students are reading the files stored on their mobile phones carried surreptitiously into the examination halls."

He further goes on to say that there also have been cases of imposters taking examinations on behalf of their friends, which is shameful for an institute of high repute.

“There is not much that we the faculty have been able to do to prevent dishonest students from cheating in exams and it appears that a substantial part of the academic system at IIT Bombay now stands compromised,” reads the letter.

Putting the onus on the institute, he says,"There is not much that we the faculty have been able to do to prevent dishonest students from cheating in the exams, and it appears that a substantial part of the academic system at IIT Bombay now stands compromised. The current situation as it prevails at IIT Bombay is a stigma on the reputation of this esteemed institute and makes many of us hang our heads in shame."

The Professor has demanded that the institute set up anti-cheat squads, on the lines of the anti-Romeo squads employed in Uttar Pradesh by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. to curb malpractices and bring everyone involved to book.

Meanwhile, none of the IIT Bombay Professors, Dean and Director have replied to media queries till now. While cheating in Board exams have hit national headlines several times before, IIT have never seen to be in question until now. The explosive letter has raised questions on the veracity of the fact whether only meritorious and deserving students are passing out of the institute.
