Among the various university rankings released every year, one thing usually predominates: the sheer number of schools from the US and Europe that populate the top of the rankings.

In most rankings, the vast majority of top universities are from the US, the UK, France, Germany, and Italy, thanks to the huge endowments universities in these countries have.

But look beyond the western world, and there are many exceptional universities offering great teaching and research. That's becoming increasingly true in the Arab world, where despite geopolitical troubles, the number of top universities is growing.

Using the Times Higher Education's (THE) Emerging Economies university ranking, we took a look at the best institutions in the Arabic-speaking world. THE ranks universities on several metrics, including the standard of teaching, research, the number of citations in research papers, and the international outlook of the universities. It then gives an overall rating out of 100.

A large number of universities on the list are in Saudi Arabia, thanks to large endowments, but schools in Jordan, Oman, and the UAE are also prominent.
