Engineering is a top paying major for graduates.

"When it comes to earnings, choosing a major matters more than getting the degree," The Center on Education and the Workforce wrote in a report called "The Economic Value of College Majors."

But that's not the sole determinant of your earning potential. The state where you are employed in the workforce is also highly important when it comes to earnings.

The Economic Value of College majors used Census Data to analyze wages for 137 college majors and reported median earnings for a bachelor's degree broken out by major and state.

Business Insider filtered this data to find the 20 states with the highest median earnings for a particular major. We've ranked the states and listed the major in that state with the highest-earning potential.
