The last month of the MLB season is in danger of being a snoozefest
With about 30 games left in the season the last month of the Major League Baseball season is in danger of being uneventful as nine of the ten playoff spots are already nearly locked up.
Using the PECOTA projection system at Baseball Prospectus, which simulates the remainder of the season thousands of times, nine teams have at least a 92.0% chance to make the playoffs and six of those are a virtual lock at 96% or better. The only playoff spot that appears to be up for grabs is the second Wild Card spot in the American League. The Texas Rangers, who have won 14 out of their last 19, could soon lock that spot up also.
This doesn't mean there is nothing to play for. The AL West and AL East division races are still up for grabs with two teams battling in each division. But at least three, and maybe all four, of those teams are going to make the playoffs one way or another.
