New mothers in Bulgaria are given 410 days of maternity leave, 45 of which come before birth. Fathers get 15 days.
The country's National Health Insurance Fund pays both leaves at 90% of the parent's salary. After six months, mothers can choose to pass the remaining leave onto fathers.
At the end of maternity leave, parents can choose to continue taking paid leave until the child turns 2, and split the remaining days. During that extra time, the parent on leave gets paid the minimum monthly wage, or about $200.
