Amazon India, the e-commerce portal has had a pretty good run in the country for the last 18 months and as it’s set to complete three years this week, the company also made news for investing an additional 1,350 crore (about $200 million dollars) in its India unit this year with the aim of accelerating the momentum gained.

After losing ground to Alibaba in China, it’s incredibly important for Amazon to win in India, the world’s fastest growing economy and especially against Flipkart, the market leader in the country’s online retail industry.

What will be important for the company in the coming months is the kind of people they hire to steer their plan forward. And, seems like Amazon India has already ensured they hire the best people with their unique hiring policy.

In a freewheeling chat with Business Insider, Raj Raghavan, Amazon India’s Director and Country Human Resources Head confessed how hiring for Amazon India is a uniquely different process as compared to other companies.

“Being a technological and customer oriented company, the skill sets we are looking for in our potential employees are very different and varied,” claimed Raghavan.

And, naturally the company also has high bars when it comes to recruiting.

“We hire a lot of superachievers. At Amazon India, there’s an unsaid rule that anyone we hire into the company should be 50% better than the rest of us,” he revealed.

He further added that this serves two purposes- one, they hire absolutely the best people for Amazon India and two, they get to learn from their new joinees.

“I have to be able to say, ‘I’m glad I hired you’ to a new joinee,’ Raghav added, when asked to describe an ideal Amazon India employee.
