UN tells Why Now is the Right Time for More Young Girls to Consider Technology Careers

There's a reason why the United Nations is highlighting the need to promote technology career opportunities for girls and women in the world’s fastest growing sector.
International Telecommunication Union wing of the UN estimates a skills shortfall of over two million jobs in the information and communication technology sector within the next five years.
The point the agency is trying to make with these figures is that there’s a huge underlying opportunity for women in this crisis. Girls and young women who learn coding, apps development and computer science will not only be well-placed for a successful career in the Information and Communication Technologies sector, but ICT skills are rapidly becoming a strong advantage for students in just about any other field they might choose to pursue. Moreover, they can expect to earn good salaries.
The agenda came up during sixth ‘Girls in ICT Day campaign’ organized by ITU in its effort to raise awareness globally on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider studies and careers in ICTs.
The larger impact women involvement in ICT is going to bring would be that it can become a major accelerator of socio-economic development in several countries. Maybe it's time we start thinking about this!
