The hike, which has been proposed by the Human Resource Development ministry, would be applicable from January 1, 2016 if approved by the cabinet.

The number of such faculty and staff across all Central and state universities as well as the Centrally funded technical institutes, including IITs, IIMs, NITs, IISERs is around eight lakh.

This change would cost the government Rs 75,000 crore over a period of three years, which is why it was also taken up for discussion at the PMO on Monday, sources told ET.

It was in 2006 that there was a pay revision for teachers, giving them a pay packet higher than a civil servant. This edge would most likely be retained in the upcoming revision as well.
