Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo had a brief conversation with President Donald Trump on Friday, in which Trump told Calvo he supports Guam "one-thousand percent."

"I just wanted to pay my respect," Trump said to Calvo over the phone. "And we are with you 1,000%. You are safe, we are with you 1,000%."

Calvo said he "never felt more safe or so confident" with Trump "at the helm."

"So, with all the criticism going on over there, from a guy that's being targeted, we need a president like you," said Calvo. "So I'm just so thankful, and I'm glad you're holding the helm, sir."

Trump reciprocated the sentiment and suggested that the stalemate between the US and North Korea could have had a different outcome, had he been the president in years past.

"Don't worry about a thing and they should have had me eight years ago, or at least somebody with my thought process, because that was the time," Trump said. "And frankly, you could have said that for the last three presidents. But you're going to be taken care of."

Calvo also commented on what he described as political divisiveness in the US:

"I wish there would be less partisanship up there, this is a time of threats to the United States," said Calvo. "It shouldn't be Democrats or Republicans, it should everybody be unifying behind our president."

"Well, you're right about that," Trump replied. "But you know, unfortunately we are living with a very obstructionist group. But maybe that will change."

Trump continued to exchange pleasantries with Calvo, saying that the governor had "become famous," and suggesting that he would visit the US territory in the future.

"Come on over and visit," Calvo said as he laughed.

"You know what, that could happen ... it looks so beautiful to me," Trump said.
