You'll Need An iPhone And A Dedicated App In Order To Download Apps For The Apple Watch
We already know that the Apple Watch requires an iPhone to fully function, and it turns out that users will need their iPhone to download Apple Watch apps, too, according to a new in-depth report from popular watch blog ABlogToWatch (via 9to5Mac).
Instead of cramming the App Store into a watch-size format, Apple will use a dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone to discover and download new apps for the watch.
In attempt to conserve battery life, it also looks like the Apple Watch will take advantage of the iPhone's horsepower to crunch through complex computations, according to ABlogToWatch:
Apple Watch users will install an Apple Watch app on their iPhone, which will be used to download apps onto the watch as well as likely manage Apple Watch settings. A user's iPhone is also used to help with computational demands. Apple cleverly pushes a lot of processor needs to the phone in order to preserve Apple Watch battery life. Thus, the Apple Watch is snappier, with longer battery life because a lot of tasks can be off-loaded to the host phone. Having said that, aside from installing apps, most things can be done from the watch itself (such as adjust settings, customize the interface, select watch dials, switch apps, etc...).
It makes sense for Apple to use the Apple Watch's tethered connection to the iPhone to maximize battery life, as the Apple Watch's battery life is currently "about a day," and anything less would likely be a problem when marketing the watch to consumers.
