Hate crimes lead to less Indians applying in US universities

The number of applications from Indian students to US universities has gone down because of rise in the number and frequency of hate crimes, along with uncertainties about potential changes in visa policies by the Donald Trump government.
A survey across more than 250American colleges and universities, which was conducted by six top American higher education groups, has shown a decline in number of Indian students applying in the US by 26% in undergraduate applications, and 15% fall in graduate applications.

As per the report, India and China currently constitute almost half of US international student enrolment, and the combined number goes up to about half a million.

The number of students from China enrolling in US universities has also gone down, with 25% fall in undergraduate studies and 32% in graduate studies.
The survey was conducted jointly by American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the Institute of International Education, Association of International Educators, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and its focus subgroup International Association for College Admission Counseling (ACAC).

The main reason behind this fall in the number of international applications could be the perception that more and more student visas are being denied by US embassies and consulates in China, India and Nepal, along with the perception that the environment in the US is now unsafe and less welcoming for foreign individuals.
