iPhone 6S users are complaining that the home button can get 'burning hot'

First reported by 9to5Mac, users have taken to Apple's help forums and Twitter to complain about the issue. The experiences are similar: the screen would turn black and the TouchID sensor would become hot to touch. The problem, according to the forums, is to hold both the home and lock buttons for 10 seconds, resetting the phone.
The issue persists even after the phone is reset, however, with one forum user complaining that it had happened four times. Another user experienced the issue twice. The phone wasn't covered or under any heavy stress during either event.
Users took to Twitter to complain about the defect as well.
Last night my iPhone 6S Plus went totally unresponsive and the home button got very hot. I had to hard reset it to bring it back to life.

iPhone 6s powered off on its own; the home button became very hot & remained so until I did a hard restart. This evening was the first time.

My iPhone 6s shut off with 50% battery left and the home button became so hot I couldn't touch it… New feature?

All of the users likely have a phone that came from the same defective batch of units and a common theme among the complaints is that the phones were pre-order models. Apple sold 13 million handsets in the opening weekend and it doesn't appear that the problem is widespread.
Business Insider has reached out to Apple to clarify the scale of the problem and to ask how users who experience it should proceed. We will update the post when we hear back.
