Shot 9 times, CRPF commandant wakes up from coma

CRPF commandant Chetan Kumar Cheetah has proved to the world why he has Cheetah, the Hindi word for ‘tiger’ in his name.
Shot at least nine times while fighting terrorists in the Hajin area of Bandipora district of Kashmir, Cheetah slipped into coma for around two months, but has now recovered, leaving doctors amazed at the miracle.

Cheetah was in the ICU of the AIIMS trauma centre for over a month, but doctors have now certified him fit to be discharged.

"We are planning to send Cheetah home on Wednesday," Dr Amit Gupta, professor of trauma surgery and critical care, told TNN, adding that the recovery and its pace was no less than a miracle.

Within 24 hours of his admission into the AIIMS trauma where he was airlifted to from the military hospital in Srinagar, he underwent a surgery to remove a portion of the skull so that intra-cranial pressure could be reduced. After that, he was put on heavy antibiotics to reduce infection, while his wounds were repeatedly cleaned.

There were at least three different treating him at AIIMS. Ophthalmologists took care of the wound in left eye; however, the right eye which was shot at and had its globe ruptured, couldn't be repaired. A team of orthopaedics worked on the fractures in his limbs, and critical care experts planned his antibiotic therapy.

Along with the medical and surgical intervention, his strong willpower added to his passion for fitness made his recovery possible.
