Many parts of Mumbai had to deal with power cuts today as a 500 Mw power generation unit of Tata Power tripped, crippling power supply in the city.

The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) gets its power from Tata Power as it doesn’t have its own generation units.

“The incident has triggered in rotational power cuts by Tata Power in areas such as Chembur, lSantacruz East, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Kurla, Tilaknagar, Vikhroli, Sakinaka and Juhu,” a Reliance Energy spokesperson said. Reliance Energy has power purchase agreements with Tata Power.

Tata Power confirmed this in a statement: “Tata Power would like to inform that today, on September 2nd at 09:45 hours, the power supply was affected due to tripping of Unit #5 of Trombay Power Station. This tripping has resulted in load reduction of Parel, Mahalaxmi, Dharavi, Chembur and Gr Road area of Mumbai to control loading on 220Kv Khargar - Nerul – Sonkar - Trombay tie line. We are working towards an early resolution and will ensure power supply to these areas at the earliest. We would like to reiterate Tata Power’s commitment to providing reliable and 24X7 quality power to the city of Mumbai.”
