According to World Health Organization (WHO), India is home to 15 million people who are visually impaired, out of a total 37 million people worldwide. Children with visual impairment require special schools but fortunately, many government and non-government institutions are now working towards this direction. Business Insider India has come up with a list of 4 Delhi-based institutes that cater to the visually challenged children.
1. Institution For The Blind
Established in 1939 in Lahore, IFB was relocated to Delhi after the Partition. This is the oldest existing
2. Janta Adarsh Andh Vidyalaya
Established in 1970 by J.S. Sharma, who himself was visually challenged, this institute is located in Sadiq Nagar and offers education and hostel facilities for the kids. And some of the alumni have been successfully placed in various organisations. The school runs on donations and no fees are charged from the kids. An institution with a pan-India presence, AICB has 22 affiliates all over the country and happens to be one of the most reputed educational facilities for the visually challenged kids. It houses a Braille press and also provides training and employment to the visually challenged youngsters. The Delhi centre is located in Rohini and can be reached at 011-27054082.
4. National Association For The Blind
Started in 1979, NAB was awarded the prestigious National Award by the Indian government for its key role in the welfare of the visually challenged people. In collaboration with the National Institute of Open Schooling and IGNOU, NAB has been successfully helping kids with visual impairment – so that they can be self-reliant after completing their studies. It also provides training in Computer Operations and IT, and has a Braille press to take care of the special needs of these children. It is located in RK Puram and you can reach NAB at 011-26102944.
