India's first campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) outside the country will be established in Tanzania's Zanzibar, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, with plans to launch programmes in October 2023. IIT Madras will collaborate with Tanzania's ministry of education and vocational training. The education ministry of India recommends high-performing universities to create campuses abroad, said MEA. The initiative is a reflection of the "longstanding friendship" between India and Tanzania and a reminder of the focus on building people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South, it added.
