President Donald Trump tweeted Monday morning that former President Barack Obama "colluded or obstructed" with his actions after Russia meddled in the 2016 US election.

"The reason that President Obama did NOTHING about Russia after being notified by the CIA of meddling is that he expected Clinton would win and did not want to 'rock the boat,'" Trump tweeted. "He didn't 'choke,' he colluded or obstructed, and it did the Dems and Crooked Hillary no good."

The president appeared to refer to a Washington Post report on the Obama administration's response to intelligence that Russia interfered in the US election.

"It is the hardest thing about my entire time in government to defend," one former senior Obama administration official told The Washington Post. "I feel like we sort of choked."

Trump continued on his tweetstorm Monday morning, writing that the ongoing investigations into his campaign's ties to Russia have not produced public evidence of collusion by his "people."

"The real story is that President Obama did NOTHING after being informed in August about Russian meddling. With 4 months looking at Russia under a magnifying glass, they have zero 'tapes' of T people colluding," Trump tweeted. "There is no collusion & no obstruction. I should be given apology!"
