"The world has received North Korea's latest message loud and clear: this regime has signaled its contempt for its neighbors, for all members of the United Nations, and for minimum standards of acceptable international behavior," Trump said, in a statement released by the White House.
"Threatening and destabilizing actions only increase the North Korean regime's isolation in the region and among all nations of the world," Trump said. "All options are on the table."
North Korea's missile flew over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido at 5:58 a.m. local time, according to Japanese government officials.
The Japan Times said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe called the launch "an unprecedented, grave and serious threat" that damaged the security of the region.
Abe discussed the incident with President Donald Trump in a phone call Monday, according to the White House. Both agreed to increase pressure on North Korea following the missile launch.
"The two leaders agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, as well as to countries around the world," said the White House statement regarding the call. "President Trump and Prime Minister Abe committed to increasing pressure on North Korea, and doing their utmost to convince the international community to do the same."
During the 40-minute call, Trump also reiterated that the US was "100% with Japan" and was supportive of Japan's defense efforts, Abe said to reporters.
