The Indian Navy had sent an official letter of request (LoR) to US Department of Defense for purchasing 22 unarmed high-tech multi-mission Predator Guardian drones for better maritime surveillance in the Indian Ocean, to which it could be saying yes.

Recently, India was designated a 'major defence partner' of the US, and this could have played a role in the decision, says TOI.

Even though the US government is yet to make a formal decision, it is believed to have started an inter agency process regarding the same.

As per top governmental sources, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter have held detailed discussions on predator Guardian UAV to fulfill maritime surveillance requirements.

The process could be completed before Obama leaves his presidency in January 2017.
