6 years after Tinder, YouTube learns to swipe

  • Users can now swipe to go through videos on the platform.
  • The feature is aimed at increasing engagement with YouTube users.
  • India currently has over 245 million monthly YouTube users.
With over 245 million monthly users, YouTube in India is undoubtedly one of the most visited apps. Now, it wants to ensure you don’t leave the platform when you are done watching a video.

The platform is introducing a swipe option for videos that will let you easily navigate through videos. By swiping forward, the user can move to the next recommended video while by swiping back one can re-watch a video.

While the feature is currently available for iOS users, it will soon follow suit to roll out for Android users.

This move is to ensure that YouTube users, the majority of which are mobile, have more ease in using the platform and easily scroll through videos.

The feature is also similar to Instastories, the 24-hour photo sharing feature by Instagram, which definitely hiked up the user base of the photo sharing platform.

In December 2018, the platform had announced the silent autoplay feature where videos on the home feed of the user automatically start playing as you scroll through the videos.

India is one of the largest markets for the platform and currently 80% of Internet users in the country also actively use YouTube every month.
