- In addition to breaking records, "Black Panther" inspired a pop culture phenomenon.
- "Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong," Coogler wrote.
In its first four days in theaters, "Black Panther" broke multiple records, and inspired a pop culture revolution.
On Tuesday, director Ryan Coogler thanked fans for their support in an emotional letter. "Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent," Coogler wrote.
In Brooklyn, New York, a man proposed to his girlfriend before a "Black Panther" screening that he didn't even have a ticket to. Throughout the country, fans are showing up in Wakanda-inspired clothing to celebrate their heritage being represented on the big screen and in a major movie. The film also remains a hit with critics, with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Coogler's letter was posted on the Marvel Cinematic Universe social media pages on Tuesday.
"Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong," Coogler wrote. "It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film. But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters often moved me and my wife to tears."
Coogler ended the letter by thanking fans for giving the team who made the movie: "The greatest gift: the opportunity to share this film, that we poured our hearts and souls into, with you."
