The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a show cause notice to Idea Cellular for allegedly violating Cellular Mobile Telephone Services (CMTS) licence terms in Delhi region.

On June 19, DoT sent a notice to the company, asking it to explain within two weeks as to why action should not be taken against it for the alleged violation.

In 2007, Idea had allegedly issued 3,640 mobile phone connections to Limco Sales Corporation (LSC), which rented them to individuals. Renting of SIM cards was not allowed under CMTS licence.

The operator had also accepted that the names of subscribers for the same mobile connection were changed without any change in the date of activation as and when it received the customer acquisition forms in the name of new customers. DoT said Idea’s defence was “satisfactory.”

Under the agreement, many important rights were passed on to LSC by Idea without any measure to ensure its enforcement.
